Have you purchased a Digital Signage Display for your business? If you have, then you understand that purchasing one cost a sizeable amount. If you are still deciding, this blog may shed some light for your decision. It is important to note that LCD, LED, and OLED each have their own pros and cons. Hence, the decision to purchase them must be according to the business’s requirement. A Digital Signage is essentially a projection screen used to present a variety of content to a targeted audience. These contents can be relating to informational, advertisement and graphical display. Ultimately, the purpose of a Digital Signage Display is to capture attention and leave a lasting impression. To do so, there are specific features to look out for that to happen.

Digital Signage: Understanding LCD, LED, and OLED

LCD

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) uses liquid crystals that have properties of both liquids and solids. They can change when an electric current is applied. LCD displays are known for their excellent colour accuracy and low-cost when it comes to smaller screens. However, they are more prone to uneven distribution of light from the backlight source and have limited viewing angles. Having said these, LCD are most suitable for indoor use.

LED

The LED (Light Emitting Diode) consist of a grid of tiny LED modules that emit light directly. LED Display Screen directly emit light, which offers high brightness, excellent colour accuracy, energy efficiency, and long lifespan. However, these benefits carry a higher price and large LED Display often show visible seams when viewed nearby. Despite all that, the LED screen has the highest application rate and is often found in outdoor installations.

OLED

The OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) similar to LED Display, consist of light emitting diodes. The difference is that OLED has organic compounds that emit its own light without the need for backlight. This difference allows for in-depth perception of colours and images and improves contrast ratios. OLED display also has faster response times, wider viewing angles and come in thin lightweight design. Among the three, they are more prone to burn-in, have a shorter lifespan and carries the highest price point.

Digital Signage: Food for thought

There are seven factors to consider before deciding the right technology for your Digital Signage Display.

1) Intended Use

Will the Digital Signage Screen be used indoors or outdoors? Is there a space restraint on the placement of the screen? What are the operating hours of the Digital Signage Display?

2) Brightness

If you need high brightness levels for outdoor or well-lit indoor environments, LED displays are a strong choice.

3) Colour Accuracy

For applications where colour accuracy is critical, LED and OLED displays often offer better colour reproduction compared to traditional LCDs. Applications in information, entertainment and advertisement often rely most on conveying messages based on specific colours.

4) Contrast

Among the three, OLED displays provide the best contrast and true black levels. True black enhances the perception of colours, improves contrast ratios, and adds depth to images. This contributes to a more immersive and visually pleasing experience.

5) Budget and Size

On the cost table, OLED displays ranks first, followed by LED and LCD. However, LED Display allows for larger scales while LCDs are often more cost effective on smaller screens.

6) Viewing Angle

Amidst the three, OLED displays generally offer wider viewing angles. This is particularly important if the size of location is five to six times longer than the screen.

All things considered, the choice depends on your specific requirements, budget, and the environment in which the display will be used.
